Barra Airguns Expert Tips:
Choosing the Right Air Rifle
There’s nothing quite like a well-designed air gun, and the team at Barra Airguns has combined expertise and passion to create air rifles that are both sleek and powerful. Understanding that one size doesn’t fit all, Barra Airguns offers a variety of designs to meet diverse needs. Our range includes electric rifles, CO2 rifles, pneumatic rifles, pre-charged pneumatic (PCP) rifles, and break barrel rifles.
When shopping for an air rifle, the first step is understanding the power source. Air rifles typically fall into five main categories: pump (single-pump and multi-pump), CO2, break barrel (spring and gas piston), PCP (pre-charged pneumatic), and electric air rifles. Each type offers a different shooting experience in terms of power, recoil, noise level, and maintenance. Knowing how you plan to use your rifle (backyard plinking, pest control, small game hunting, or precision target shooting) will help narrow down the best option.
Our air rifles come in .177 caliber and .22 caliber, with some PCP models available in .25 caliber.
- .177 caliber is ideal for target shooting and pest control due to its flatter trajectory.
- .22 caliber delivers more impact energy for small game hunting.
- .25 caliber (usually PCP) offers maximum knockdown power.
Choosing the right caliber depends on distance, target type, and desired stopping power.
FPS (feet per second) measures pellet velocity. While high FPS air rifles may sound impressive, the ideal velocity depends on your application. For backyard target shooting, 800–1,000 FPS is often more than enough. For small game hunting, 900–1,200 FPS in .22 caliber, or higher, provides excellent performance. Ultra-high velocity isn't always better, consistency and accuracy matter more than raw speed.
Not all pellets perform the same. Pellet weight, shape (domed, hollow point, pointed), and material affect accuracy and impact. Domed pellets are typically best for precision target shooting, while hollow points are ideal for hunting. Testing a few high-quality pellet types with your specific air rifle will help you dial in maximum accuracy.
Regular cleaning and proper storage dramatically extend the life of your air rifle. Keep the barrel clean, store your rifle in a dry environment, and follow manufacturer guidelines for lubrication. PCP and CO2 rifles require additional attention to seals and O-rings to maintain consistent pressure and performance.
